myGovID and your myGov account are different

Your myGov account lets you link to and access government services like Medicare and the ATO.

myGovID is the Australian Government’s Digital Identity app you can use to sign in to a range of participating government online services like myGov.  

You cannot view your myGov account or Inbox within the myGovID app.

When you sign in to myGov using your myGovID app, you’ll enter or accept a 4-digit code in to your myGovID app. This is instead of using your myGov username, password and entering security codes.

Connect and sign in to your myGov account using myGovID

To connect and sign in to myGov using myGovID, your myGovID willl need at least a Standard identity strength.

To sign in to myGov using myGovID:

  • go to the myGov sign in page
  • select Continue with Digital Identity
  • select myGovID as your Identity Provider
  • enter your myGovID email address – a 4-digit code will appear onscreen
  • log into your myGovID app and enter or accept the 4-digit code
  • go back to your browser and consent to sharing your information with myGov

You can also connect your myGovID to - or disconnect it from - your myGov account when signed in to myGov. To do this, select:

  1. My account
  2. My profile
  3. Digital Identity and follow the prompts.

You will be able to sign in using your myGovID or your myGov sign in details. 

Recover your myGov account using myGovID

If you’ve lost access to your myGov account, you may be able to recover it using myGovID. You need a myGovID with a Strong identity strength to recover your myGov account.

Your name, date of birth and email address in your myGov account need to match the details you use to set up your myGovID.

To recover your myGov account:

  1. go to the myGov sign in page
  2. enter your username and password
  3. select the link I didn’t get my code or I can't answer my question
  4. select Continue with Digital Identity
  5. select myGovID as your Identity Provider
  6. enter your myGovID email address – a 4-digit code will appear onscreen
  7. log into your myGovID app and enter or accept the 4-digit code
  8. go back to your browser and consent to sharing your information with myGov.

If you can’t set up a Strong myGovID you’ll need to create a new myGov account and link to government online services again.

Create a myGov account using myGovID

To create a myGov account using myGovID, you need a myGovID with at least a Standard identity strength.

To create a myGov account:

  1. go to the Create a myGov account page
  2. select Continue with Digital Identity
  3. select myGovID as your Identity Provider
  4. enter your myGovID email address – a 4-digit code will appear on screen
  5. log into your myGovID app and enter or accept the 4-digit code
  6. go back to your browser and consent to sharing your information with myGov
  7. read and agree to the Terms of use.

Next time you sign in to your myGov account, you will need to select Continue with Digital Identity to use your myGovID.

Set up the myGov app using myGovID

To set up the myGov app using myGovID, you'll need:

  1. open the myGov app and select Sign in
  2. select I agree if you agree to the privacy notice and terms of use
  3. select Use myGovID Digital Identity
  4. select myGovID as your Identity Provider
  5. enter your myGovID email address, then select Login
  6. a 4-digit code will appear on the login screen
  7. open your myGovID app and enter or accept the 4-digit code
  8. go back to the myGov app
  9. to give your consent to share the details outlined on screen with myGov, select Consent
  10. create and confirm your 6-digit myGov app pin.

Once you have set up the myGov app, you can use your 6-digit myGov app personal identification number (PIN) or your mobile phone's security features like face and fingerprint recognition to sign in.
